Xavier University has at least THREE identifying codes that need to stick to individual scholarships (sometimes opportunities, usually portfolios). They are utilizing Fund Code and Aux Fund Code within each portfolio already, so their next recourse was to start adding in their lowest-priority third code into the Notes field (does not need to show up in e.g. Fund Disbursements). They've also added other miscellaneous data into the Notes area, but that's another matter.
The trouble with Notes is that area is not editable so it is difficult to maintain. There might be typos in the code entered, for instance, but these cannot be amended; a new Note simply has to be added.
I haven't seen this problem come up frequently -- Xavier might be my first client that has so many separate pieces of metadata that need to be attached to their funds. They're "making do" using Notes as their third field but it's a sub-par experience.
This could be solved by making Notes editable, but a better solution might just be an ability for clients to provision their own (perhaps carefully limited) custom fields within portfolios and/or opportunities.

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (uwosh) is requesting something similar; the ability to edit notes on the portfolio level. Instead of using the notes feature, this might meet that need and be editable.
